Hope at Work
This Lunch & Learn focuses on a simple but important idea:
Most workplace wellbeing and performance conversations focus on:
- workload
- stress
- burnout
- engagement
- productivity
But part of day-to-day performance comes from something else:
whether people believe there is a way forward.
Not hope as positivity.
Not “be optimistic.”
Hope as a practical system that helps people keep moving when work is difficult, uncertain, or blocked.
That includes:
- direction
- options
- belief in action
- persistence
- recovery
- visible progress
What the session covers
The session walks through:
- how problems start to feel insurmountable
- why hope is better understood as a cognitive system
- how Snyder’s Hope Theory breaks hope into goals, pathways, and agency
what happens when hope drops into doubt and inaction - how low hope shows up at work as delay, overthinking, safe choices, and disengagement
- why most organisations measure output but not belief in the future
and the weekly behaviours that help rebuild movement in teams
The focus is practical rather than inspirational.
The aim is not to tell people to “think positively.”
It’s to help leaders and teams:
spot where movement has stopped
understand which part of the system has broken
rebuild direction
create options
trigger action
and make progress visible
Key Idea
One of the core distinctions in the session is this:
Two people can face:
the same workload
the same pressure
the same problem
the same environment
…but respond very differently.
Why?
Because performance is not just about capability.
It’s also about:
whether people can still see a future they can influence.
